Many hikes and backpack trips over the last few years to one of my favorite places in the world -- just 1 to 2 hours west of my home.
A road trip from Calgary to Inuvik in 2006. We borrowed my friends VW Westfalia van and explored the Dempster Highway for a week, hiking and backpacking in the Tombstone mountains and Richardson mountains. We also spent a few days hiking in Kluane National Park, exploring the Stewart Cassiar highway in north west BC, and other sights along the 8300 kilometer road trip.
Several road trips from Calgary to explore the desert and canyon lands of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. A little bit of Oregon sneaked in this category too, but not enough to merit it's own gallery.
In 2007, Debbie and I traveled for 99 days through Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru and finished with the Galapagos in Ecuador. We did our own self-guided travel, traveling from place to place by bus and airplane. We also rented vehicles for local exploration in the Peninsula Valdes region of Argentina, Bariloche Argentina, and the Atacama region of northern Chile. This was a great way to get a bit off the tourist "gringo trail". We followed the spine of the Andes mountain range near the southern tip of Chile to the equator in Quito Ecuador. A similar distance in North America would be from Miami to Inuvik in the NWT of Canada.
Even though this was part of our South American trip, it deserves a separate gallery on its own. The only way to see the islands is to arrange a guided tour on one of the many cruise ships which vary from just a few passengers to over 100. We opted to fly to the islands without a pre-arranged tour and booked one as soon as we landed in Puerto Ayora which is the main town on Santa Cruz island. This can be risky in the main season, but if your schedule is flexible and you're in the shoulder season, you have a good chance of finding room on a ship. We were lucky and got a place on The Beluga which accommodated 16 passengers and had an excellent guide.
Travel photographs of people and cultural places. A small gallery for now which shows Machu Picchu, other towns/cities in South America, and a few photos from India.
